2024 Canadian GP Roundup
Formula 1
Through goes… Magnussen??!
The Canadian GP was a crazy weekend in the Formula 1 world as it was our first race of 2024 with changeable conditions. And the team to make the most of the conditions was the Haas drivers who were the only team willing to risk the wet tyres in the rainy conditions, the rest of the grid opting for the intermediates. Kevin Magnussen started in 14th and Nico Hulkenberg started in 17th, but both drivers gained ten positions each, running in 4th and 7th respectively at one point. However, their success was short lived as a dry line was cleared on the track and sun emerged, forcing the Haas drivers to make an early pit stop each within the first 13 laps of the race.
Alex Albon made one of the overtakes of the season where he jumped from p11 to p9 in a double overtake on our beloved Daniel Ricciardo and the Alpine of Esteban Ocon, however it would not be enough for the Thai driver as he ultimately was forced out of the race as Carlos Sainz spun out and Albon’s avoiding action could not save him from the rear of Sainz’ car.
Overall, there were 5 DNF’s in Canada, one of the worst tracks this year in terms of in terms of the number of cars to finish the race, although the fans loved every second of it. The other drivers to not finish the race were Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, Williams’ Logan Sergeant and Red Bull’s Sergio Perez.
Max Verstappen inevitably won out in Canada and after a hard fought 70 laps at the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve in Montreal, followed closely by McLaren’s Lando Norris and The Mercedes of George Russell, however the double Ferrari DNF and the DNF of Red Bull’s Sergio Perez have brought title contenders McLaren closer to the lead of the pack as they chase Red Bull.
